David Ryan Robinson’s Fantasy Map of London

David Ryan Robinson doesn’t want to be known just as the map guy. Which is kind of difficult when you spend six months of your life drawing a huge A2 (that’s 23-and-a-half by 16-and-a-half inches) map of London.

It was fall 2011, and Robinson had just arrived in London. Like many young professionals, Robinson realised that the UK capital was the place to establish a firm career path. Robinson had always been into drawing, and he never got out of it. He graduated from university in June, taking a degree in art, and he knew that to advance in the creative industries he ought to move to London. “I’d only been a couple of times before,” he points out, on day trips and vacations.

Progress on my latest illustration for ZSL - London Zoo

So yesterday was a busy day! After Rex Features got in touch with me, I was featured on the both Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph, for my map!
Here’s what readers are saying:
"how did this take hundreds of hours? its not even that good. if it had said 10 hours maybe even 5 hours, i’d still think that was a bit long"
- Gary, Bexley, 15/8/2012 16:57
"why is this load of sh… in the news?? i,ve got a 5yr old grandchild that can do better"
- tell it like it is, liverpool england, 15/8/2012
"Well he’s got the publicity he was obviously after! Having first seen the drawings I thought what a fantastic 10 or 12 year old - found out he was 23 and a Graphic artist! - Drawings are great all the same but very juvenile in design."
- PaulW, London, 15/8/2012 17:26
"My child drew a picture of a dinosaur wearing a cowboy hat. Far more interesting. ‘Artist’ is not a simile for ‘Idiot’"
- Redspider, Blackpool juxta Tamworth, 15/8/2012 21:12
"should have just drawn a toilet ……."
- stuart, stockport, 15/8/2012 20:24

"Its a shame he didn’t put his 100 hours to better use like our heroes in Afghanistan and Iraq or our nurses working 72 hour shifts in the NHS. They would love nothing better than to eat an ice cream. Instead they are working to make people like David’s lives better and he doesn’t even look grateful in his picture. Broken Britain.”
- Jake Finnhouse, Birmingham, England, 15/8/2012 18:22

"Its a doodle… so what? I mean anyone can draw this given enough time. Like the quip on the back of a tshirt that says "I’m with Wally"… so we know where wally is. This is where the fun is, in the detail. But its nothing that I or most others couldn’t do…. and in 6 months thats a lot of forgone earnings.."

- EUSSR, London, 15/8/2012 20:39
I think some of these gems will be going up on my website later! Despite the negative, I got a lot of positive! Countless emails came through yesterday and the map sold out within hours. I’m expecting another day of people emailing asking if there are any available. I’m sorry but there is not! The maps where an addition of 100 and now they have gone i’m afraid!
However, after the success of this map, I will now be drawing another map of New York City! To keep updated of the progress of this map (when I begin!) and my other work, please follow my Tumblr (this!) and Twitter: @DRyanR
Keep it classy!

Tonight, on Sunday 25th March 2012, I finally finished my map of London.  It has taken me about 5 months to complete, but it’s done.  I feel like some sort of illustration god right now. I now need to sleep, tomorrow will be the day of scanning and colouring!

Yesterday I joined my friend and amazing illustrator Zhenia to an Urban Sketchers meet up. Everybody showed off their latest work and then started sketching the London skyline. I noticed an old lamp on a bench that was distracting my view of the skyline, so I drew that instead.
